Every year, MLB teams sign free agents with the hopes that those players will be the final pieces of a playoff contender or that a star will boost a club from mediocrity to success. 

Inevitably, a general manager will pay more for a free agent than his skills are worth. Sometimes, teams overpay to win the bidding for a player. But on other occasions, a front office pays top dollar for someone who's not a superstar.
