WWE Champion CM Punk defeated Ryback to retain his title at the Hell in a Cell pay-per-view Sunday via a dirty pin with the help of the referee.
Ryback and Punk had a better-than-expected match, but the ending was tainted by the referee who cost the undefeated star his streak.
While the loss for Ryback kills much of the momentum created over the last few months, the muscle-bound star still looked strong in defeat.
What It Means
The rumors surrounding Punk holding the WWE title until the Royal Rumble, where he would face off with The Rock, look to be coming to fruition.
It has become blatantly clear that Punk is the next big face of the company, and the WWE is pushing Punk harder than they have pushed any star in over a decade.
The last champion who received the kind of streak Punk is currently on was John Cena himself, and we have seen how that turned out for the WWE.
While Ryback has lost the undefeated streak that brought on the comparisons to Goldberg, that may not be such a bad thing.
With no streak left to compare, the WWE Universe will have to take Ryback for what he is.
Punk is obviously going to Royal Rumble, where he will eventually lose the title, but the possibility of having another chapter in this Punk vs. Ryback feud would be a great plan for the company’s January PPV.
