With all the hype going on with three QBs—Matthew Stafford, Mark Sanchez, and Josh Freeman—aren't you forgetting someone? Nate Davis. Could this guy be the right quarterback? Can he be your NFL team's franchise QB? Here is the Draft Talk.
Nate Davis has an unusual style of holding the ball, but it doesn't affect his game. If you take a look at the picture above, Davis doesn't throw on the laces, which isn't bad or anything. When I saw him in the College Football Skills Challenge on ESPN, he did very well in the throwing challenge. He finished second place behind Stafford.
Now let's get straight to the point. Mark Sanchez is going to be a bust. I don't know why everyone says he is going to be a star, but I have to say, he won't be a success.
Then there is Stafford. This guy will be like Matt Leinart. He will do good for his first two years, maybe lose his job, but then strike again.
Then there's Josh Freeman, who will be some kind of JaMarcus Russell type. He won't do well in his first two to three years, but will be very good in the other years.
Now who's left? Nate Davis. The Ball State native. My man from my home state. Indy!
Mark Sanchez has only started 16 games in his college career. Nate Davis? He has been a starter for Ball State since 2006. Even though Ball State got destroyed by Tulsa in the GMAC Bowl, Davis did pretty well. Well no, not really.
Last year, Nate Davis had thrown over 3,500 passing yards. He also had 26 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. According to ESPN, that is a 106.8 quarterback rating in NFL standards.
In his career, Nate Davis has 74 career passing touchdowns with over 9,200 passing yards. His best year was in 2007 when he threw over 3,600 yards and 30 touchdowns and six interceptions.
He has been to two bowl games, the International Bowl in 2008 and the GMAC Bowl in 2009. Now what can he do this year? Where will he end up?
Certainly, the Lions won't take him. Davis looks like a second round pick. There are three teams that may draft him. You may want to cross the Lions out. It looks like Nate Davis may be a QB for the Browns, Buccaneers, or probably the Redskins.
With a chance of Washington drafting Andre Smith as the 13th pick, they can add Nate Davis in the other rounds. Nate looks like a starter for them. Jason Campbell needs to improve still, but it could be a battle between three QBs there.
How about the Browns? Derek Anderson had a disastrous year. Brady Quinn looked like a bust, but he can still improve. It looks to me that it will be a battle between Davis and Quinn. Anderson will get beat out easily.
My favorite would be the Bucs. With no chance of getting Jeff Garcia back and with probably about six other quarterbacks that we have never heard of but are on the depth chart with the team, the Bucs will bid for Nate Davis.
Davis can be excellent. He can be a big factor in the passing game, which will leave some room for Derrick Ward to run the ball away. The Bucs can also look to reach big Ramses Barden in the third or fourth round. Looks like Nate Davis will get a big 6'6" target. The Bucs can make a big draft steal.
Here are my projected numbers for Nate Davis next year in the NFL: 2,335 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, 18 interceptions. That could be pretty good stats for a rookie.
Now fans, what do you think? Is Nate Davis a good QB for your team? Or is he just a bust? You make the call!
