2009 NFL's Updated Mock Draft: Mark Sanchez Still Top-Pick

Football Maniaxs@@FantasymaniaxsSenior Writer IMarch 12, 2009

Quite a few NFL teams' needs were filled during free agency, which makes all mocks up to this point obsolete. Even more telling is what needs were not addressed in the last couple of weeks.

It is not because the players aren’t available. There are quite a few players at most every position, who can help a club, still looking for work. Most of them will have to wait until teams see if their draft plans fall into place like they expect.

Round 1

1. Detroit (0-16) – QB Mark Sanchez, USC

(Last mock’s pick: LB Aaron Curry)

So much for any sense taking hold in Detroit. Now, I am about the biggest Daunte Culpepper fan around, but even I would have the sense to get him some competition for the starting role.

They let go of a couple of backups, who granted weren’t much anyway and are leaving competent QBs like Byron Leftwich and Jeff Garcia to twist in the wind. They are drafting a quarterback here. I still like them to make the wrong choice and tab Sanchez over Stafford.

2. St. Louis (2-14) – OT Eugene Monroe, Virginia

(Last mock: Monroe)

Now, more than ever, OT has to be the pick here. Michael Crabtree may be enticing, but if Marc Bulger is going to survive another year to throw to anybody at all, they need a guy who can pass protect.
