Giants Scrape out a Win over the Turnover-Prone Redskins
A sloppy second half turned into a nail-biter down the stretch, with Robert Griffin III converting the third fourth down of the day en route to a 30-yard touchdown pass to Santana Moss to take the lead.
The victory was short-lived, as the Giants responded with a 77-yard touchdown pitch and catch from Manning to Cruz that put the G-Men back on top.
Griffin threw an interception and the Redskins lost three fumbles, the final turnover dashing their comeback hopes. The Redskins defense had no answers for most of the game, and their offense couldn't move with Morris being shut down in the second half.
Final Score: Redskins 23, Giants 27
Manning threw for 337 yards, but threw two interceptions in the second half. His lone touchdown on the day proved to be the difference. The Redskins have allowed at least one 100-yard receiver in each of their games this season, and Cruz torched them for 131 yards and his patented salsa dance on the touchdown.
The Giants defense got to Griffin three times, but harassed him on a number of occasions.
New York was better on turnovers, making the Redskins pay for putting the ball on the ground, recovering three fumbles, including one on the final drive of the game as the 'Skins were trying to drive to win the game. They allowed three fourth down conversions but made plays when they had to.
No team can turn the ball over four times and come away with a win, and the Redskins are no exception. The Giants defense was opportunistic in the second half, pressuring Griffin and jumping on loose balls.
Morris was invisible in the second half, putting more pressure on Griffin than usual. He finished with 120 yards, but his absence late in the game made the Redskins one-dimensional.
The Giants offense had no trouble gaining yards against the injury-depleted Redskins secondary, and they made their big move on the 77-yarder from Cruz to Griffin to regain the lead.
Washington falls to 3-4 (0-1) while New York moves to 5-2 (1-2) on the season. The Giants proving they are still the team to beat in the NFC East and the Redskins showing they're a ways away from being the cream of the crop.
With the game on the line, the Redskins offense goes to work from their own 20 yard line. Josh Morgan makes a catch, but puts the ball on the ground, luckily recovering the fumble.
A nice completion to Moss AND HE FUMBLES, Giants recover putting an end to whatever comeback hopes the Redskins may have had.
Welp. Back to normal. Go about your day. Paradigm in tact.— chad dukes (@chaddukes) October 21, 2012
The Giants line up in victory formation and take knee to end the game.
Final Score: Redskins 23, Giants 27
Griffin lays a beautiful throw right over the shoulder of the streaking Moss for the pair's second connection of the game. You can't say enough about the plays Griffin made on this play, and hats off to Paulsen for stepping up with the loss of Davis.
Not to be outdone, Manning finds Cruz streaking down the field and connects for a 77-yard touchdown to put the Giants back on top.

It comes down to the final drive for the Redskins, can Griffin work more magic on this drive?
Redskins 23, Giants 27 ; 1:13 remaining Fourth Quarter
New York slows down on their drive, and punt to put the game in Griffin's hands. A field goal doesn't do it, and the Giants defense will be looking to come after Griffin on every drop back.
Griffin takes a big hit on second down, and the play goes for no gain. Griffin winds up and launches a prayer down the field which goes over Robinson's head and falls incomplete.
Three man rush flushes Griffin out of the pocket, he throws some nifty moves on pursuing linemen and finds Paulsen for the first down.
You hold the world champs to 20 points? You should win the game. Offense has to come through here. Defense has done their job.— chad dukes (@chaddukes) October 21, 2012
That's the third fourth down conversion of the game, and the Redskins are playing with fire in this quarter.
1:54 remaining Fourth Quarter
First play of the drive and the Redskins get to Manning for the first time. Jackson, Cofield and Bowen crush Manning for a big sack. They follow it up with a stop of Bradshaw.
Fletcher out of the game with a hamstring injury, and his return is questionable.
Brown gains 17 yards for a first down, and the Redskins defense continues to deflate after making big plays this quarter.
3:21 remaining Fourth Quarter
The Giants are getting wise to the option read, and Griffin made a bad read on the fumble. Ruling on the field stands after the review, Giants recover on their own 29 yard line.
Washington had five turnovers all season, and have turned the ball over on three of their four second half drives.
On the very next play Rob Jackson, Brian Orakpo's replacement, snatches Manning's pass out of the air to put the ball right back in the Redskins hands. Huge play from the 'Skins defense.
Now it's getting fun! #TurnoverCity— FOX SPORTS: NFL (@NFLONFOX) October 21, 2012
Quick three and out sets up a field goal, can't fault the safe call by Shanahan on this drive. Forbath hits his third of the day, thank goodness.
Redskins 16, Giants 20 ; 5:21 remaining Fourth Quarter
Osi Umenyora gets in on the action as Griffin has nowhere to go with a rusher in his face and on his back. Third and 14 play goes for 13 yards, but Shanahan makes another bold move to go for it for the second time on this drive.
Gutsy calls from Shanahan, even with plenty of time should he settle for the field goal. A ton of confidence shown in Griffin's ability.
Griffin rolls out to the right with one defender between him and the marker, a pump fake frees him up for a first down.
Option read goes bad, Griffin gets hit and coughs up the ball, third turnover of the ball game.
Redskins 13, Giants 20 ; 7:18 remaining Fourth Quarter
Sneaky option handoff to Young goes for 16 yards, but Jason Pierre-Paul makes his first appearance of the game on a 12 yard sack of Griffin. Niles Paul missed the block that left Griffin to fend for himself.
Redskins unable to convert on 3rd and 17 despite the big catch from Paulsen for 14 yards, but Shanahan decides to go for it on fourth down.
Washington remains a perfect 4-for-4 on fourth down conversions this season, with Hankerson making a good catch to move the chains. Giants defense frozen by the playaction and quick step from Griffin.
9:20 remaining Fourth Quarter
Giants offense goes to work in Redskins territory, Manning hits Hixon for 19 yards inside the 20. A completion to Cruz for a first down, Hynoski stuffed on a great catch on the left side.
Bradshaw slams into the line, and looks to be stopped before putting the ball over the goalline for the touchdown.
The play is under review, but appears to be a touchdown. London Fletcher is on the sidelines with helmet in hand. No word on why, but it could be another big loss for the Redskins if he doesn't return.
Ruling on the field stands. Giants have 19-13 lead, and will go up 20-13 if kick is good. 12:55 left in game. #Redskins— Mike Jones (@MikeJonesWaPo) October 21, 2012
Redskins 13, Giants 20
Not the game anyone expected, with the Redskins putting up a great fight on the ground and trying to get the passing game working. Turnovers on back-to-back drives doused their momentum, and put the Giants in control of the game.
If New York makes away with a touchdown on this drive, the stadium will make it hard for Griffin and the offense to work.
Griffin hasn't let turnovers affect him this season, but it is less about what he allows, and more about what the Giants defense throws at him now.
Start of the Fourth Quarter
Washington's defense has a turnover in nine straight games, but can't stop teams from moving the ball. The loss of Brian Orakpo earlier this season has killed their outside pass rush, though Barry Cofield has been getting into Manning's face a few times today.
Trickeration on the 3rd and short play, Griffin flips it to Aldrick Robinson on the reverse, and the Redskins pick up another first down.
Griffin drops the ball, but picks up the fumble and turns it into a five-yard gain. Unbelievable, and dangerous to make a habit out of.
Griffin drops back and pumps once, then throws it right to Stevie Brown for the second turnover for the Redskins offense.
Redskins 13, Giants 13 ; 1:42 remaining Third Quarter
The Giants offense makes quick work of this drive, gaining 15 yards with Bradshaw and following it up with a 17-yard completion to Bennett. Washington's defense has no answers in the passing game.
Bad throw from Manning is INTERCEPTED by Josh Wilson! Redskins defense comes up big after the Morris fumble.
Skins finally take advantage of a bad Eli throw. He's missed some throws today. Joyous.— danny rouhier (@funnydanny) October 21, 2012
No real pressure on the play, Manning just floated it right to Wilson. No Giants receiver within seven yards of the throw.
4:59 remaining Third Quarter
With Davis out, Paulsen becomes a big part of the Redskins offense. Underutilized this season, Paulsen is a big target, and the best blocking tight end on the roster. He has two catches for 42 yards on the day, getting two first downs for the Redskins.
Griffin takes a run over the right side for six yards to bring up a 3rd and short. He finds Morris on the left for the first down, and the Redskins have converted five of their eight third downs today.
A strong run for 15 yards is nullified by a leg whip on Polumbus, putting the Redskins in a 1st and 23 situation. Morris takes the hand-off on the very next play and coughs it up, Giants recover and take over at their own 39.
First turnover of the day couldn't come at a worse time for Washington.
Redskins 13, Giants 13 ; 8:00 remaining Third Quarter
An early holding penalty for the Giants puts them in a 2nd and 20 situation, giving the Redskins some room to work. The screen to Bradshaw goes for four yards, and Stephen Bowen gives them five yards with an offsides penalty.
Third down play comes up short, and the Redskins force the Giants to punt. Strong showing by the 'Skins defense, though it is still very early in the half.
Wait. A stop on defense?!— chad dukes (@chaddukes) October 21, 2012
Banks remains unremarkable in the return game, and the Redskins take over at their own 36 yard-line.
10:40 remaining Third Quarter
After the 11-yard pick up by Griffin, the Redskins take their first shot downfield to Leonard Hankerson. Hankerson gets behind two defenders only to have a well-thrown ball slip through his fingertips.
Receivers these days don't seem willing to lay out for a pass within their reach, and Hankerson could have had a huge reception if he had.
Redskins punt for the first time today, a short kick to the Giants 27 yard line where Manning takes over for the first time this half.
Redskins 13, Giants 13 ; 12:53 remaining Third Quarter
With the Redskins receiving the kick out of halftime, Mike Shanahan goes back to his scripted plays, which have proven successful this season. The problems start when they go off script and can't punch it into the endzone.
The Redskins have seven second half rushing touchdowns this season, but just two passing touchdowns.
The second half kick goes for a touchback, and the first play of the drive goes for 11 yards on a scramble from Griffin.
Redskins 13, Giants 13 ; 14:48 remaining Third Quarter
The Redskins offense has moved the ball well, particularly on the ground, producing 146 yards in the first half. On the flip side, the Giants have had their way with the Redskins defense, with Manning hitting any and all receivers for more than 10 yards per completion.
Each team managed just one touchdown, but with the game tied, the second half is a different ball game.
Expect the Giants to use their success through the air to open up on the ground and keep the 'Skins defense on its heels. The Redskins offense needs to open up through the air, or find a way to score on the ground.
Giants can't stop the remarkable RG3 (w/ lots of help from AlfredM). But Skins can't get pressure on Eli - picking 'em apart. 13-all at half— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) October 21, 2012
Bad news for the Redskins, as Davis may be done for the season following his Achilles' injury earlier in the game.
The Giants are dissecting the Redskins defense, who have bothered Manning on just two dropbacks. They orchestrate an eight-play drive to move into field goal range to tie up the score.
Tynes lines up the 39-yarder and slips it through the right upright to tie it up with halftime right around the corner.
Redskins 13, Giants 13
Griffin opens the Redskins next drive with a 28-yard run, followed by a 15-yard run from Morris, who already has 94 yards on the day.
On their 3rd and five play just inside the 20 yard line, Griffin looks to run, but is swallowed as he slides to the right side. Justin Tuck gets his first sack of the season, and forces the Redskins to settle for a field goal of their own.
Forbath hits a 43-yarder to put the Redskins back in the lead with under two minutes remaining.
Redskins 13, Giants 10 ; 1:49 remaining First Half
Giants extended their drive on third downs, but come up short of the end-zone on this drive. Manning missed on the throw to the end-zone, and Lawrence Tynes comes out for the 27-yard kick to tie the score.
The Redskins defense needs to get some pressure to force Manning into some bad throws. They need to get off the field if they want to have any chance late in the game.
Eli had no TDs against us last yr in both games.... weird— Eric Bickel (@EBJunkies) October 21, 2012
Redskins 10, Giants 10 ; 2:53 remaining Second Quarter
New York wastes no time on their next time, throwing right at the Redskins on three straight plays for 43 total yards. The Redskins can't get any pressure on Manning, and he's been able to take his time going through his progressions.
First pressure of the game flushes Manning out of the pocket, and he scampers for a first down.
The Giants offensive line is controlling the line of scrimmage, which opens up the ground game, and Bradshaw powers his way for a tough seven yards.
4:25 remaining Second Quarter
Morris has 64 yards already today, and the Giants have not given them any reason to stop handing the ball off. Griffin takes a nasty hit as he dives for the first down, which makes every 'Skins fan cringe after his concussion two weeks ago.
Receiver screen to Santana Moss breaks for a TOUCHDOWN!
Giants defenders eaten up in Redskins blocks, Moss trots in untouched.
Redskins 10, Giants 7 ; 8:45 remaining Second Quarter
It may be early in the game, but this next drive is a big one for the Redskins. They need to respond with a touchdown, or a productive drive to make the Giants defense work to stop their offense.
First play of the drive has Darrel Young stuffed for a loss, and a response from the remarkably tame Giants crowd.
Griffin with all kinds of time off the playaction finds Hankerson open down the field for 23 yards. Giants defensive tackle Linval Joseph down on the play.
Play action by Skins is ridiculous good.— mark schlereth (@markschlereth) October 21, 2012
Playaction looks like the bread and butter of this Redskins offense, and only opens things up for Griffin to run as the game progresses.
Redskin 3, Giants 7
Brown takes the hand-off and goes over the top for the touchdown to put the Giants on top in the second quarter.
Redskins safety Reed Doughty shaken up on the play, another blow to their thinning secondary.
That's why you gotta come away with 7, not 3 when you have the chance.
