Barcelona booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League with a 5-2 victory against Lyon on the night and a 6-3 success on aggregate. The hosts strolled into a 4-0 lead in the first half courtesy of a double from Thierry Henry and strikes from Lionel Messi and Samuel Eto’o.
Jean Makoun pulled one back just before halftime and Juninho struck three minutes after the restart, but in truth the French champions never looked like coming back as Barca pressed for more goals.
Things got worse for Lyon as a frustrated Juninho was given his marching orders after picking up a second yellow card in stoppage time and Seydou Keita took full advantage by snatching another in the final seconds.
Porto ensured Atletico Madrid followed their city neighbours Real out of the Champions League after playing out a goalless draw against the Spanish side at the Estadio do Dragao.
After recording a 2-2 draw from the first leg at the Vicente Calderon, Porto always held the upper hand and although they were unable to make the breakthrough on Wednesday night, Jesualdo Ferreira’s men still progressed through to the quarterfinals on the away goals rule.
