Bears Target Josh Freeman

Jay Morgan of the Chicago Bears spoke to me on condition of anonymity, so I'll call him deep bear.

"On the outside chance Stafford or Sanchez drops to us at 18, we'll jump at the chance.  That said, we have our eye on Josh Freeman.  We think he could replace Sid Luckman.  We want to draft him in round two, but we'll be watching the Lions," deep bear said.

I asked why they were worried about the Lions.

"If they don't draft a QB with the first pick, then either at 20 or 33 they hope to get the heir to Bobby Layne ahead of us and will force our hand at 18," deep bear said.

"OK," I said, "I get you targeting a quarterback, but isn't pick No. 18 a bit of a reach for Josh Freeman?"

"Is it a 'reach' to get the player you want before someone you know will take him?" deep bear asked.

I grunted.

"Besides," deep bear said, "If he falls short of Sid Luckman and is but a McMahon, we'll take that."

This is satire.  Jay Morgan does not exist and the quotes are made up.
