He left a tiny pod to jump out into the world as a superstar. Now Felix Baumgartner will take the plunge into marriage with girlfriend, Nicole Oetl.
The Daily Telegraph reports the man who amazed the planet with his plummet to New Mexico soil is hanging it all up and settling down.
When you reach the ultimate in skydiving, there is really nothing else to jump from.
A source close to Baumgartner spoke to the The Daily Telegraph.
He loves Nicole like mad and now will walk her up the aisle as he has achieved the ultimate in his profession.
According to the source, they plan to settle in Switzerland where the skydiver hopes to fly mountain rescue helicopters. Sounds like quite a serene change of professions.
You may have seen Oetl during Baumgartner's brief jaunt from the top of the atmosphere back to earth this past Sunday.
She was among the family, visibly nervous as she held her breath along with the rest of the world.
I'm retired from the daredevil business. I want to find a nice decent job as a helicopter pilot. I'll fight fires and rescue people. No e-mails, no phone calls.
The 43-year old has spent his life pushing himself higher and to more extreme ends, but there is nothing left for him to do except spend the rest of his life with Oetl.
While he maintains he never feared for his life, he certainly experienced some thoughts of a grim end as his family watched.
His main concern was not to fail in front of his family, adding “You do not want to die in front of your parents and all these people. I thought 'please God, don’t let me down.’”
As we all know, he landed triumphantly and is now ready to begin life anew. Fittingly, the couple plan to marry in the New Year.
