It is hard to believe that the Jets (2-3) will find a way to rally this season without their defensive leader.
Head coach Rex Ryan said Revis will have surgery next Thursday to repair a torn ACL, leaving the Jets little option but to place him on the season-ending injured reserve list, according to Jane McManus of ESPN. Ryan said the following:
I know I had said before about Darrelle that I'd like to wait for him to have surgery before we placed him on IR or not. Unfortunately with that time situation, you've had Eric Smith being out this week, we're going to need that roster spot.
When I said it was a 0.002 percent chance? Well, it's not that high. I was holding out hope but the more information we got, I realized that wouldn't be good for Darrelle, either.
Ryan was hoping there would be a chance for Revis to return this season if the team made the Super Bowl. The odds seem similarly small for the Jets to make a playoff run without filling Revis' roster spot.
Smith sprained his knee on Thursday. The free safety will miss Sunday's game versus the Indianapolis Colts, and the Jets couldn't enter the game missing two defensive backs.
New York signed rookie safety Antonio Allen from its practice squad to fill Revis' roster spot.
Revis is doing some preliminary rehabilitation to strengthen the knee prior to having surgery. He had 11 tackles, three passes deflected and an interception in two games.
