Showing Derrick Mason the Money

As Ray Lewis is to the Baltimore Ravens defense, so Derrick Mason has become to the Baltimore Ravens offense. Irreplaceable, and worthy of an extension that will keep him in Charm City for the duration of his playing career.

“I don’t know where this thing is going to end, but I think I’ve earned the right by what I’ve done on the field - and off the field - for the last four years with the Ravens….I have one more year left on my deal, and I want to play more than one year,” Mason said.

“For a player, one year is no security. No security whatsoever. I think I’ve earned the right to go to management and let them know that I want to play more than just one year.”

I wonder if there is some rumor or insider info going around the Ravens locker room that players have to get paid not now, but right now. Maybe it’s the seasoned veterans that the Ravens have cut in the past few weeks.

Maybe players, like the rest of the country, are getting settled in with the prospect of having less money for an extended period of time in the near future.

Whatever it is, Derrick Mason is the latest good guy to ask for a good look from a team poised to be great. If they can foot the bill for their player talent.
