David Ortiz: To No Surprise, First Base Not for Him

Not that I'm trying to pat myself on the back or anything, I'm certainly not the first person to have the suspicion that Ortiz wasn't injured, but rather didn't want to play first base to avoid embarrassment.

Newsday's Jim Baumbach spoke to the Red Sox slugger earlier today. Here are some of the quotes Baumbach gathered from Ortiz:

  • "I'm not a first baseman," Ortiz said. "Everybody knows that."
  • "You got to be aware of what you are capable of doing and deal with it. I know people believe that as a first baseman you don’t have to be throwing all over the place but you never know when you need to make a throw. Tough situation, save the game, or whatever, it doesn’t work out and then what are you going to say?"
  • "Dude you know what? I'm not a first baseman anymore. I hung up my glove a long time ago. I might go out there and try but everybody knows me as a DH, not as a gold glover. Since day I, since I come here, I said I would play if I had no problem, first base, but if you got something that bothers you and at the same time you’re not even a real first baseman…"

I asked earlier if Ortiz would just admit that he doesn't want to cost his team a game by playing a position that he really doesn't play anymore and, in essence, he did just that.
