Sophomore guard Cam Long has proven he needs to be the guy to have the last shot in any situation. His daggers in the Colonial Athletic Association conference tournament have propelled the George Mason Patriots (22-9) into the championship game tonight against the top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth Rams (23-9).
On Saturday night, Long held the ball with just under two minutes remaining. The Dukes of James Madison had their season pretty much end when Long drained the 3-pointer, to put Mason up 56-50 with 1:47 to play.
Then again last night, in a back-and-forth battle with the No. 11 Towson Tigers, Long again put up a prayer as the shot clock expired to put Mason up six with just under 30 seconds to play. Mason went on to win 56-48 to advance to Monday's final.
Tonight against VCU, the Patriots will need big plays and great defensive stops. If John Vaughan lives up tso his honor on the CAA All-Defensive team and Cam is able to hit the clutch shots he has this weekend, Mason can beat the heavily favored VCU Rams, who are playing in their backyard for a conference title.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN2 or ESPN360.com.
