The San Francisco Giants fought to live another day with a huge extra-inning win over the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night, but still face an uphill battle in terms of advancing in the postseason.
If the Giants are going to tie the best-of-five series at two games apiece on Wednesday, Barry Zito will have to follow in Ryan Vogelsong's footsteps and shut down a potent Cincy lineup. Signs of that happening are positive, as Zito boasts a stingy 2.35 ERA over the past month and has given up just two runs in 12 innings against the Reds this year.
On the opposing mound will be young right-hander Mike Leake, recently added to the Reds' postseason roster to replace an injured Johnny Cueto. Leake is 3-0 with a 4.18 ERA in five career starts against the Giants, but had an underwhelming regular season, going 8-9 with a career-worst 4.58 ERA in 30 starts.
