One thing we know for sure: Either the Bills were mistaken, or defensive end Mario Williams was. Which one it was, we will soon find out.

ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting (via WGR 550 Sportsradio) that the NFL is investigating an alleged wrist injury that Williams complained of last week. The investigation pertains to Williams' status on the injury report—or rather, his absence from the injury report.

Williams has not missed any practice reps with the ailment, but the league's policy states that players must make the report even if they participate fully and are a certainty to be in the lineup.

There is a specific designation for injured players that fully participate in practice. If Williams was truly injured, the Bills could be in trouble for failing to list him. If it is discovered that he was not truly injured, Williams' lie will be exposed.

Williams has been depressingly ineffective in the first five games of the season, during which the defense has been victimized and the pass rush has been rendered almost completely ineffective. A nagging wrist injury would be a nice way to explain that away—so would illegal hands to the face.

We will have our answers about the Bills' defensive end soon enough, but we'll still be looking for answers as it pertains to the defense as a whole after a second consecutive abysmal performance.
