The New York Yankees rode ace CC Sabathia to a 7-2 win and 1-0 ALDS series lead over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday night.
Sabathia went 8.2 innings and gave up just two runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out seven. It appeared as though his 120-pitch, near-complete-game gem would go unrewarded, but some timely hitting from New York in the top of the ninth made sure that wouldn't happen.
The teams entered the final inning tied at two, but a Russell Martin leadoff homer and an array of base hits—including a two-run double from Robinson Cano—off closer Jim Johnson gave the Yanks the lead for good.
David Robertson recorded the final out of the game as Sabathia took the win. The normally solid Johnson, who gave up five hits and four earned runs in a third of an inning (he now has a sparkling playoff ERA of 108.00), was saddled with the loss.
Game 2 is Monday at 8:00 p.m. ET in Baltimore.
