Victor "Vicious" Ortiz lived up to his nickname Saturday night when he stopped Mike Arnaoutis in the second round of their 140-pound bout at the San Jose HP Pavilion.
Round 1 had opened slowly with Ortiz throwing right hooks as a jab towards Arnaoutis causing him to move backwards. Much of this was a feeling-out round with both fighters respecting each other. Ortiz did just enough to win the round.
In Round 2, Ortiz became more aggressive and went on the attack. Ortiz landed a big left hand that forced Arnaoutis back into the ropes, where Ortiz without hesitation jumped on Arnaoutis with a big flurry.
Arnaoutis could do nothing but cover up as Ortiz just flurried and pounded away. The ref jumped in as soon as he saw that Arnaoutis was not answering any of the shots and was forced to involuntarily drop his hands.
The official time of the stoppage was at 1:27 of round 2.
Ortiz is only 22 years old and a promising prospect in the 140 division with his big statement tonight.
HBO commentator Max Kellerman was attempting to make a comparison of Ortiz to a prime Tito Trinidad taking on the big veterans of sport and knocking them out. Ortiz replied that he is just happy he can now eat Taco Bell cause the fight is over.
Victor apparently designs his own boxing trunks and also had the stylish hip hop retro lines shaved on the side of his head.
Ortiz improves his record to 24-1-1 with 19 KO's.
