The bad news just keeps on coming for the University of Kentucky football program. Joker Phillips announced at his press conference today (the full video of which can be seen at the University of Kentucky Athletics website) that senior running back CoShik Williams had suffered a torn labrum in his hip.
An MRI recently revealed the serious extent of the damage, which occurred on his fourth carry against Western Kentucky University back on September 15.
The injury will will force him out for the rest of the season and effectively ends his career at UK. It's an incredibly tough break for a kid that began his Wildcat career as a freshman walk-on. Raymond Sanders and Jonathan George will now be counted on to carry the load for the rest of the season.
With regards to the quarterback situation, Phillips said that both quarterbacks seem to be improving and getting a better grasp of the playbook. He applauded Jalen Whitlow, who has been staying in the film room long after everyone else has gone home after practices this week.
Phillips also stated that the shotgun/no-huddle offense that Kentucky likes to run works better for a quarterback with Towles' skill set.
At this point, it's not entirely clear who will see more time under center on Saturday against Mississippi State. Wide receiver Daryl Collins told Nick Roush of Kentucky Sports Radio that both quarterbacks have gotten an equal amount of reps in practice this week.
While Whitlow had the advantage of game experience, Towles may be better suited to run the offense without significant changes to the game plan or playbook.
What it looks like will happen, however, is that we will see a platooning of the quarterback position between both true freshmen. This method rarely if ever produces results, but it might be the only option that the Wildcats have at this point.
Kentucky's next opponent will be the Mississippi State University Bulldogs at noon EDT Saturday, October 6, in Lexington.
