Josh Beckett made his third start of Spring Training on Friday, a three-inning bout against the Marlins. Terry Francona wanted Beckett to throw around 45 pitches for the outing, and Beckett hit exactly 45 pitches in those three innings. The Red Sox went on to win the game 5-3.
After those innings were over, Beckett felt so well that he wanted to go more, not even realizing he had reached his pitch limit.
Catcher Jason Varitek said that Beckett was throwing well, and Beckett reaffirmed that by saying he felt well, and was confident in his stuff. Varitek also said that Beckett was mixing in some good curveballs and changeups.
Just a year ago in Spring Training, Beckett's back went out on him in a Spring Training game, at City of Palms Park, against the Marlins, but that wouldn't happen this time. In three innings, Beckett struck out two batters and did allowed no earned runs.
