NCAA, Maryland Terrapins Women's Basketball

Unlike the Maryland Terrapin men's basketball team, the Lady Terps have the look of a true championship contender.

The Lady Terps secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament and will begin their road to the Final Four at home in College Park on Friday.

They are even good enough to fall into the NCAA's "We Hate the Baltimore-Washington Area" initiative.

The Terps have Coppin State as their opening-round opponent. Not that the Terps have any reason for concern in Coppin State.

But the selection committees, both men's and women's, pitted most of the small D.C.-area teams against other area teams. This, tragically, does not allow them chances against squads not sharing a zip code with them, and hurts the area's fans as well.

Still, I digress. The consensus this season was that the Maryland women would be great, and the Maryland men would at least be good.

American University came along to bust the happy times up for the guys.

But the Lady Terps kept rolling toward a 30-3 record and a No. 1 tournament seed.

Looking at their bracket, their first true test will probably come in the Sweet 16 against Vanderbilt. And Vanderbilt is not of the same caliber as Rutgers, North Carolina, and Duke—the only three teams to have defeated the Terps this season.

Here's hoping that Greivis Vasquez and company make for good cheerleaders after they get bounced from the NIT.

The Lady Terps deserve all the praise en route to what could be another National Championship.
