NHL Lockout: Get to Know Ice Girl Alexis Augusto
Over the last decade, the NHL has become notorious for lockouts. The 1991-92 and 1994-95 seasons were both shortened due to labor issues, and the entire 2004-05 season was cancelled after the players union and owners failed to come to terms in time to save the season.
Right now, the owners and players are so far apart that you could fit an ocean between them—a big one—so it doesn't look like this thing is going to come to an end anytime soon. It means there's no better time to get to know some of the sports world's most under appreciated gems: NHL Ice Girls.
Recently, I've been lucky enough to get to know Ms. Alexis Augusto, a two-year veteran of the Lady Panthers Ice Crew, a little better. Alexis won't actually be returning for the 2012-13 season, but since the players might not be either, that doesn't technically make her a former Ice Girl just yet.
What's important here is that now you get to know her a little better too. You're welcome.
Alexis On: Why She Won't Be Returning, Even If the Players Do
BR: First some sad news, you mentioned you won't be returning to the Lady Panthers for a third year. Why not?
Alexis: Sadly, I had to resign from the Panthers to finish up my degree. My school schedule conflicted with the practice schedule, and unfortunately, I had to choose school. Education comes first.
BR: So responsible! Where are you going to school?
Alexis: I am finishing my last year in college now! I go to Florida Atlantic University and cheered for them in 2007. Although I attend FAU, I'm a Miami Hurricanes fan through and through!
Alexis On: The Panthers and the NHL Lockout
BR: Well, I'm sure you'll be missed by fans, but certainly can't argue that education should definitely come first! What has been your most memorable experience as a Panthers Ice Girl?
Alexis: My most memorable experience would definitely have to be playoff Game 7 in 2012. Not only being there and seeing such high energy and spirit from the fans, but being able to dance and be a part of the organization was something I'll never forget.
BR: Wow. From Game 7 of the playoffs to an indefinite lockout in the same year. Any thoughts on the whole debacle and which side is stomping their feet more?
Alexis: I am sad to hear about the NHL lockout. I think the owners are being a little too greedy. I know if I was still a dancer, I would be even more bummed!
BR: As a hockey fan myself, I couldn't agree more. So have you always been a Panthers fan?
Alexis: Yes, actually I've always liked the Panthers. My dad took me to my first game at the age of 8. I (also) have a soft spot for the New York Rangers because my entire family (excluding me and only me, sadly) is from New York.
Alexis On: The New York Jets
BR: So we know you're a hockey fan. I also seem to recall you're also a bit of a Jets fan. What do you think of the whole Tim Tebow experiment?
Alexis: HUGE JETS FAN! I absolutely love the energy they have. We're one of the most loyal fans in football I'd say. (Tim) Tebow is awesome! I honestly think he's a great asset to the team and just needs to be played more to prove that.
BR: Can't argue with the loyalty point! Jets fans sure don't have it easy, and things really haven't gone their way so far in 2012. What are your thoughts on Rex Ryan, think he'll keep his job if they miss the playoffs?
Alexis: Most people dislike Rex Ryan, especially here in South Florida. I happen to think he's a pretty cool guy! He's funny, loud, very energetic and serious when it comes to his team. He believes in them, and I don't think they would let him go even if they miss playoffs. The Jets wouldn't be the same without him.
Alexis On: Cheering Again, Perhaps in New York
BR: I actually agree with your point about Rex Ryan. He's made some mistakes, but he definitely adds an awful lot of personality to the NFL. You would add some personality to the NFL, too. Any chance we'll see you on the sidelines at some point?
Alexis: I actually cheered for the Miami Dolphins in 2008-2009, but I would absolutely love to dance/cheer professionally again. I'm not 100 percent sure where, but I'd definitely want to cheer for the NFL because of my huge love for football. There's no other feeling better than being on the sideline!
BR: So you're not 100 percent sure where you'd like to end up after college, but it seems like the Big Apple might be calling your name?
Alexis: I would absolutely LOVE to move. My dream is that I'd end up in New York City one day, or even in the outskirts in New Jersey, somewhere close to it, but a change of scene would be nice.
BR: All that considered, I think every Jets fan in the world would be disappointed if you weren't at least considering a tryout for the Flight Crew someday. Heaven knows they need something to cheer for themselves.
Alexis: My dancing aspiration would be to ultimately cheer for the New York Jets. My mom is from Brooklyn, N.Y., so she grew up a Jets fan and shared her passion for the team with me. They are my favorite team, and I would be honored to cheer for them someday!
Alexis On: Modeling
BR: So you've obviously been dabbling in the modeling thing, how's that going?
Alexis: I've done some modeling. Nothing too serious. But I did enter for Maxim's Hometown Hotties two years in a row and was lucky enough to be chosen amongst the millions of girls who applied.
BR: Wow, so pretty well so far. Is there anything specifically you'd like to do as a model in the future?
Alexis: I would definitely love to be apart of Maxim, and maybe do some kind of sport-themed photo shoot!
Alexis On: Her Future and Her Features
BR: So is modeling something you plan to pursue full-time as a long-term career or do have something else in mind for down the road?
Alexis: Actually, my dream career would be to be reporting from the sidelines somewhere at a football or basketball game for ESPN or Fox Sports.
BR: The sports media definitely needs more brunettes, we're outnumbered like 10 to 1! And you certainly don't have a face for radio. What do you think your best features are?
Alexis: A lot of people think my eyes are my best feature, but I would probably say my legs. Or my lips.
BR: To name a few!
Alexis On: Who Has Features She Finds Attractive
BR: Obviously you've got some bits and pieces working for you that the almost entirely male audience appreciates, but I want to know who you think is hot. Quick! Hit me with the three hottest actors out there.
Alexis: Sexiest actor, that's a tough one! I have a couple in mind: Chris Hemsworth, Taylor Lautner, but hands down, Channing Tatum.
BR: I think Magic Mike made women everywhere take a closer look at Mr. Channing Tatum. I certainly gained a greater appreciation for him as an actor and as a semi-naked dancer. How about the three sexiest athletes?
Alexis: Sexiest athlete, I can name a few of those! Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham and can't forget Mark Sanchez!
Alexis On: Stuff She Likes
BR: I'm pretty sure B/R wouldn't want me to say this, but there's a whole big world out there beyond sports, like television for instance. Do you have any favorite shows?
Alexis: I have two favorite TV shows: Modern Family and Glee. Yes, I'm a Gleek!
BR: No kidding? Definitely the hottest Gleek I've ever encountered. How about books. What's on your nightstand lately?
Alexis: I think all girls would agree with me when I say my new favorite book is 50 Shades of Grey!
BR: Ha. Balancing out the Gleek in you! And your favorite movie?
Alexis: Favorite movie, I'd have to say, Law Abiding Citizen.
BR: Actually haven't seen that, but I do love Jamie Foxx! Might have to check it out. Speaking of movies! I'm making a (pretend) movie based on your life story. What actress would you cast?
Alexis: If my life were a movie, I would want Angelina Jolie to play me because she is such a beautiful, strong woman—not to mention a phenomenal actress.
Alexis On: Moving and Grooving
BR: What's playing on your iPod right now? Well, not right now, but generally, what kind of music are you into?
Alexis: I absolutely love house music! But I'm not going to lie, I have a little hip hop flavor in me too! My iPod is probably set on the LIV Nightclub podcast though!
BR: So you're probably driving around blasting house music in your car on the regular. Personally, I think you need to own a pretty hot car to pull that off. Please tell me you do.
Alexis: I think I own a pretty hot car! 2012 Black Mercedes C 300!
BR: OK, you do. So have you ever met any celebrities? Sorry, I'm nosey and had to ask.
Alexis: I have never met any celebrities, but I do hope to walk the red carpet someday!
Alexis Says Goodbye After a Few More Random Questions!
BR: What's your favorite vacation destination?
Alexis: Aside from NYC, the best place I've EVER visited would be Italy. It's the most beautiful and romantic place on earth!
BR: I have three dogs, so I have to ask: Do you have any pets?
Alexis: I have three dogs too! Two Golden Retrievers and a Wheaten Terrier.
BR: If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Alexis: I would want to be invisible!
BR: Favorite food?
Alexis: Hot buffalo wings. There's this place, Bru's Room, where I live who makes the best ones!
BR: Tell all the other wing lovers out there how do you keep such a slammin' body, despite your hot wing intake?
Alexis: I stay in shape because I work out like a maniac! I have a personal trainer who I see at least three times a week, and in between days, I do cardio!
BR: I was really hoping you had an easier suggestion, but that's OK. Anyway! That's that. Thanks so much for hooking us up with an interview and good luck in the future!
Alexis: You're welcome! And thank you!
