PSG: Why the Parisians Can Win the Champions League

0 of 4

The Champions League is Europe's most prestigious event and a cash cow for those who succeed in it. PSG ownership has set their sights on obtaining this title. Their plan for building the club has centered around this ultimate goal.

This goal has been evident by their lavish spending on top talent. While there are varying views on how far PSG can go in Europe this season, most fans understand PSG will be a major player sometime in the near future in this competition. The following is why this season may see PSG celebrating as the kings of Europe.

Managerial Experience

Carlo Ancelotti has been involved in several Champions League competitions in his years, leading the likes of AC Milan and Chelsea. The experience is invaluable when it comes to managing a squad that is competing on multiple fronts.

Knowing how to keep the troops fresh and in form by mixing up the starting lineups and substitution pattern during the domestic campaigns will go along way to keeping PSG pushing forward.

His experience will also be a voice of calm and reason when PSG has to go on the road to places like Barcelona, Manchester United and others like them where keeping the aggregate close is a tall order.

Talent

PSG's spending has built a squad full of talent in each area of the field. To be successful in the Champions League, a team needs to be solid in all areas and PSG fits that description.

Any attack led by Zlatan Ibrahimovic is going to cause opponents to worry. While Ibra has carried the goal scoring load early in the season, PSG has players like Menez, Pastore, Lavezzi, Nene and Gameiro to help shoulder the load. On the surface, PSG have the players to form a formidable attack in the Champions League.

The midfield has a solid cast with some of the aforementioned players along with Motta, Matuidi and up and coming Marco Verratti. Matuidi and Motta are ball winners. Having them protecting the back four is key for PSG.

The defense took huge strides this summer by adding Thiago Silva. Silva is one of the best at his position and adding him to the solid experience of Maxwell, Alex and Jallet was huge. The late addition of Van der Wiel will pay dividends in his versatility, and the return to form of Saho gives Ancelotti the flexibility to match up with most squads.

Favorable Group Draw

PSG's group draw was as good as they could have hoped. Coming out of the third bucket, PSG avoided any of the top teams in the group stage.

By drawing Porto out of the first bucket, PSG has an excellent chance to win their group and avoid a next-round match up with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and other top teams who should top their groups.

The other advantage a relatively easy group draw gives PSG is the opportunity to build confidence while acclimating to the pressures of the Champions League.

Ibrahimovic

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been extremely successful in every stop of his career winning domestic titles. The one trophy that has continued to elude him has been in the Champions League. He is focused on this quest more every year as he knows his window is beginning to close.

We have seen inspired players propel their squads to European glory. Drogba was highly instrumental in Chelsea's success last year. Ibrahimovic is one of those players who has the ability to carry a club. His personal quest could see him take PSG to the level required to become the kings of Europe.
