5-star safety Vonn Bell has a top three of Ohio State, Tennessee and Alabama, but is there a way the Auburn Tigers can sneak up on his list and sway him away from those schools?
There is always a chance, especially for the Tigers.
Bell recently visited Auburn, and according to quotes via Bryan Matthews of 247Sports, there is an opening for schools like Auburn:
I still have to think about what I saw and everything. I really can’t say where Auburn stands right now but I’m still open to all the coaches, he said. I’m still looking at my options and that top three could change at anytime.
The possibility is there, so now Auburn needs to capitalize.
What do the Tigers have going for them?
The first thing Gene Chizik and the Tigers have to pitch is the strength of their current recruiting class. According to Rivals, the Tigers currently have the No. 9 ranked class but that may not even do them justice.
They feature three other Rivals 5-star commitments in linebacker Reuben Foster and defensive ends Carl Lawson and Dee Liner. Chizik can sell the idea of being the fourth 5-star commit to the class, all on defense, which would provide the Tigers with elite players at every level of the defense.
Having stud players like Foster, Lawson and Liner in front of him will only serve to make life easier for a safety like Bell. He'd be lucky to have talent like that in front of him, and Auburn can provide it.
The other plus Auburn can pitch to Bell is defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder, who, according to quotes via Matthews' report, Bell was very impressed:
That’s what I was looking at. To see how they play and how Coach VanGorder dials it up as the defensive coordinator. He’s a good coach. He came from the Atlanta Falcons and knows how to get to the next level and knows what he’s talking about.
Anytime you can provide a recruit with a coach who knows the in's and out's of the NFL and what they are looking for in players, you're going to have a huge advantage in the recruiting process.
VanGorder was the defensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons from 2008-2011. He knows what kind of talent is needed to be an effective defender in the NFL, and if the Tigers can sell Bell on the idea that having VanGorder as a coordinator can improve his chances of making it to the league, they'd be very smart to do so.
Auburn may not be looking great on the field right now, but things are going well in the recruiting department. Chizik is putting together a strong class, and it would get even better if they can sway Bell away from Ohio State, Tennessee or Alabama.
While it may be outside chance, there is still a possibility that the Auburn Tigers can make it happen.
