Hernandez-Chavez: And The Sparring Begins!

Mark MedersonCorrespondent IMarch 6, 2009

The boys were going at it today!

In preparation for the big "Lightweight Lightning" fight card on April 4 here in Austin, Carlos Hernandez was visiting Jesus Chavez's home turf - Lord's Boxing Gym.

"Famoso" (Hernandez) and "El Matador" (Chavez) traded sparring blows for six rounds this afternoon in the 80-degree Austin heat, considering Lord's Gym does not benefit from the luxury of air conditioning or heat.

This was the second day that the two spent time together in fight preparation.

As with most fighters that I have had the good fortune to meet, these two guys are a pleasure to be around. In all my days covering sports I have to say, by far the nicest athletes by sport are hockey players and boxers.  I don't know why, but that's the case.

For those that might be interested, the least friendly athletes are baseball players.

Hernandez and Chavez are ramping up their training and I imagine the sparring will get more intense in the next week or so. I'll keep you posted.

Remember, if anyone has a question for either of these two fighters as they BOTH prepare for late career, make-or-break fights. Just put it in the comments section and I'll do my best to get it answered.

Where can I comment?
