Navy (1-2) won their first game of the season at Annapolis on Saturday, defeating VMI (1-3) of the NCAA Football Subdivision soundly, 41-3.

Navy junior quarterback Trey Miller from Marietta, GA scored three touchdowns, including a 40-yard strike. Miller also completed 7-of-14 for 107 yards. Freshman kicker Nick Sloan from San Diego added two field goals on the day for Navy, from 19 and 35 yards, respectively.

In the closing moments, senior linebacker Matt Warwick ran back an interception seven yards for a score, and sophomore fullback Maika Polamalu scored on a 21-yard run to close out the scoring for the Midshipmen.

Navy will host San Jose State (3-1) next week.


The Air Force Academy (1-2) traveled to Las Vegas and lost a close game, 38-35, to the UNLV Rebels (1-3), who won their first of the year. The Falcons (1-2) scored with 4:41 left to play on a three yard run from senior quarterback Connor Dietz, his second touchdown run of the day. Georgia native Cody Getz led the Falcons on the ground with 113 yards. Fellow senior Mike DeWitt and sophomore Broam Hart from both scored rushing touchdowns for USAFA, who led 21-10 in the second quarter.

Air Force will try to even their record hosting, Colorado State (1-3) next week.


Army (0-3) rushed for 429 yards and scored five touchdowns, but lost 49-37 at Wake Forest (3-1) before 30,207 fans in Winston-Salem. The Black Knights led 23-21 at the half, but the Demon Deacons scored on a 37-yard run by Deandre Martin with 2:50 left in the game to put the contest out of reach.

Junior running back Ray Maples from Philadelphia led Army with with 140 yards rushing, averaging 9.3 yards-per-attempt, his third straight 100-yard game to start the season. Sophomore fullback Larry Dixon ran for 112 yards and a touchdown. Senior quarterback Trent Steelman added three touchdowns on the ground and threw for another score to Maples before leaving the game with an injury late in the game.

Wake Forest, behind an offensive line which averaged over 300 pounds, generated 517 yards of offense, led by junior wide receiver Michael Campanaro, who caught 12 passes for 153 yards and scored three touchdowns on the day.

Army hosts Stony Brook (2-1) from the NCAA Football Subdivision at Michie Stadium next Saturday. The Seawolves lost a narrow game at Syracuse this week, 28-17.


The US Coast Guard Academy (1-2) lost at Massachusetts Maritime (2-1) in another high scoring game, 42-38. USCGA senior QB Jon Resch from Lititzi, PA, threw for 468 yards and three touchdowns, while MMA quarterback Mike Stanton threw for 420 yards and three TDs in the win.


The US Merchant Marine Academy (2-2) scored 15 fourth-quarter points, but fell to No. 13 Hobart (4-0) in Genova, NY. SUNY Maritime College (1-2), coached by Annapolis graduate Clayton Kendrick-Holmes, lost at Castleton State in Vermont, 35-16.
