Today, the Arizona Cardinals signed Kurt Warner for a two year deal. The moment I heard the news, I thought to myself, “Forget Jay Cutler, we should get Matt Leinart”.
The Jay Cutler rumors started going around after the Broncos expressed interest in Matt Cassel. Cutler got mad, and for a good reason; he was supposed to be their franchise quarterback.
The Chicago Tribune started rumors about the possibility of trading for Jay Cutler. It may have seemed like a good idea at first, but the Broncos will never give up Cutler.
He is their franchise quarterback, and he is the only proven quarterback on their depth chart. Cutler is an Pro Bowl caliber quarterback, and in order for the Bears to pick him up, they would have to be willing to give up a lot.
On the other hand, Matt Leinart is now the second quarterback on the Arizona Cardinals depth chart. He makes around $18 million a year, so you know the Cardinals are going to try to get rid of him.
Warner is signed for two years, and knowing Leinart, he is not willing to wait that long. I think, he will try to force a trade. The Cardinals need to trade Leinart, so they can open up cap space to sign Boldin. The question is, what can the Bears offer?
The Cardinals need a tight end. The Bears are probably not willing to give up Greg Olsen, so Desmond Clark comes to mind. If the Bears add in their No. 1 draft pick, the Cardinals will have an offer they cannot resist.
An argument a Bears fan would make, is that they all ready have a quarterback: Kyle Orton. My question to them is: are you really going to trust Orton? In three of his last five games, he had a passer rating less than 50. Let me give you some numbers:
Matt Leinart: 55 percent completion, 14 TD, 17 INT, and a 71.7 QB rating in just 21 games.
Kyle Orton: 55 percent completion, 30 TD, 27 INT, and a 71.1 QB rating in 33 games.
Kyle Orton’s numbers may be a tad better, but Matt Leinart has more upside. If the Bears get him, he has the potential to be their quarterback for a long time, something us Bears fans are not accustomed too.
