Detroit — The last NHL lockout cost the Red Wings.

A drastically reduced salary cap agreed upon after the 2004-05 lockout forced the Red Wings to buy out defenseman Derian Hatcher and forwards Ray Whitney and Darren McCarty, and go with a younger and less star-studded roster.

Three seasons later … the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup.

As this lockout takes shape, it's too soon to count down the days to another Stanley Cup title. But the roster outlook for the Red Wings could benefit.
