Germany just won an easy, albeit dramatic, game against a weak Polish team. But you wouldn`t know that based upon the reaction in the streets. One would think that Germany just sealed their fourth championship given the outcry, fanfest, and total spillover into the party district of Hamburg. People are drinking copiously alongside police officers, some of whom are posing for pictures with hooligans.
One of the more interesting phenomenons from the night is the singing of We Are the Champions. Nobody seems to realize that they in fact are NOT the champions. They have a long way to go. I asked one girl why this is considered acceptable and she explained that "we are the champions tonight!" True, they are the champions of June 14th, except for Spain who won against a much greater opponent and by a much larger margin.
Oh well, Im not complaining. Ive had one of the best parties of my life and all thanks to a late goal that took the country from zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye. Go Deutschland!
