The Toronto Maple Leafs have made their first official trade deadline move in picking up Martin Gerber off of waivers.
The move allows the Leafs to dump Curtis Joseph, who never had the confidence of Ron Wilson and never gave him a reason to.
More importantly, it allows them to take out Vesa Toskala, who has looked good recently, but has been playing with an injury. Toskala will undergo surgery and be gone for the season.
Burke is a believer in having two strong goalies, and Gerber is a first rate NHL backup and a good guy in dressing room.
The big question is where this leaves Justin Pogge, as it is very likely that Toskala will be with the Leafs through most of next season.
The most obvious answer is that Burke has decided Pogge is not ready—even as a backup for next year—and needs more time as a No. 1 goalie down on the farm. Pogge says the right things but has not played at NHL quality—never mind expectations—with the Marlies or Leafs.
Trades for Moore and Antropov are to be announced within next two hours.
