So that's why Alessandro Del Piero chose Australia.
Del Piero, the 37-year-old Italian legend, flew into Sydney, Australia, over the weekend to join up with his new club, Sydney FC. At the airport, the World Cup-winning forward was greeted by a crowd estimated at 500 people.
And by 500 people, we actually mean 500 noisy, crazy, borderline obnoxious fans who waited a reported six hours for a glimpse at their new idol. What can we say, the welcome was fortissimo, eh?
The video, which is the B/R world football clip of the day, appears above. Enjoy, especially the part (around the 1:05 mark) where the Sydney FC fans go nuts over Del Piero's luggage. That's something normal, well-adjusted people do all the time, right?
Other highlights include:
- The overexcited fan who, around the 1:17 mark, (angrily?) points out that Del Piero's arrival means Australian football (no, not this kind) is on the up-and-up.
- The dancing lady who, around the 1:21 mark, gleefully points out that Del Piero is "an Italian stallion."
- And, of course, Del Piero's own words, around the 0:51 mark. He says, "I'm here not for the end of my career. I'm here for a start (of) my new career."
If you're interested in worshiping Del Piero's training gear, he'll start practicing with his new team on Tuesday, according to the report.
