Night of Champions is just hours away and everyone is starting to lay out their predictions and hopes for the events.
There are many people split about many match outcomes, but there is one thing that must happen at the event—someone with a top title needs to lose it.
When I say "top title" I am referring to the World and WWE titles currently held by Sheamus and CM Punk, respectively.
Both men have been great champions for the company and it should come as no surprise that they were chosen to be two of the longer-reigning champions in recent memory.
CM Punk is one of the most valuable talents WWE has at the moment, and Sheamus has come into his own as the baby-face champion of SmackDown.
Sheamus is approaching the six-month mark as World Champion, and CM Punk just passed the 300 day benchmark as WWE champion—cementing him in the top-10 WWE Champions of all-time, in terms of length of his reign.
Despite CM Punk holding his title for longer, I feel it is Sheamus who needs to lose his title tonight. Whether it is to Del Rio or Dolph Ziggler cashing in his case, it could not matter less.
The reason Sheamus needs to lose the title is because his character has become stale and having him work towards gaining the title back could be what he needs to get re-energized.
Sheamus is falling into what I like to call the "Cena pattern."
The Cena pattern is when a baby-face comes out and says different variations of the same thing while always "overcoming" the obstacles in front of him.
It gets boring.
CM Punk's heel turn, association with Paul Heyman and exceptional in-ring work is what keeps him fresher.
Sheamus is just sort of, well, Sheamus.
Nothing against the Irishman, I actually like him and think he has the potential to be a Hall of Famer someday, but right now he is as bland as room-temerature water, and if I hear him say "Berty" one more time I am going to throw something at my television.
We need a shake-up in the WWE and having a new World Champion would go a long way towards making that happen.
Alberto Del Rio had his time in the spotlight, which is why the ideal situation would be for Ziggler to cash in and win the title, or Del Rio to win it and then lose it to Ziggler right away.
Ziggler is someone who is capable of so many amazing things, but he has been held back for one reason or another.
The past year has seen Ziggler not only compete with the top names in WWE, but get wins over them in his journey to becoming one of the top guys himself.
His well-deserved show-off moniker makes him a perfect heel character who could easily transition to a baby-face later on down the line should WWE need that from him.
Tonight could be the show-off's chance to shine and take the world title away from Sheamus.
What do you think?
Should one of the top champions lose their title tonight?
