Arena Football League, Cleveland Gladiators, Columbus Destroyers

The Cleveland Gladiators took to the road this past weekend for their first ever away game. They didn’t have far to travel, taking on interstate rival the Columbus Destroyers in a key division game.

Cleveland kept the dream season alive, moving to 3-0 to beat Columbus 59-57 before 15,946 fans at Nationwide Arena in Columbus. Not bad for an inaugural season.

They’ll have to keep playing stellar ball, since they sit in the toughest division in the AFL.  Four teams are undefeated this season, and three of them are in the Gladiators group, including of course the Gladiators.

Quarterback Philyaw and receivers Redd and Amey continue to be the standout stars of the team.  Philyaw threw for 209 yards, Redd had seven catches for 74 yards and two TDs, and Amey had six catches for 71 yards and three scores.

With Cleveland holding a 59-51 lead, Columbus scored a TD and went for two, hoping to take the game to overtime.  The play failed, giving the Gladiators the victory.

Cleveland will play the New Orleans VooDoo next Friday evening in New Orleans.

The next Gladiator home game is April 11th, when Bernie’s team will meet his old nemesis from the NFL, John Elway's Colorado Crush.
