Ivy League Football: Week 1 Matchups Preview
While the first week of Ivy League football kicks off, the members of Ancient Eight all start with a non-league tune-up to get ready for next week’s league opener.
Here is a quick preview of these opening games:
San Diego (1-1, 0-0) at Harvard (0-0, 0-0), 12:30 ET
While academic allegations continue at Harvard concerning many varsity athletes, the Crimson will hope all distractions subside in the season opener. San Diego has had a tough time defensively in their first few games, and this will be a solid indicator of the strength of Harvard’s offense.
Princeton (0-0, 0-0) at Lehigh (2-0, 0-0), 12:30 ET
This will be Princeton’s debut of an offense missing its firepower in Chuck Dibilio. Lehigh has looked solid in its first two games of the season with two comfortable non-conference wins under its belt already.
Marist (1-1, 0-0) at Columbia (0-0, 0-0), 12:30 ET
Columbia looks to build on the momentum of last season’s upset win against Brown into this season against a solid competitor in Marist. Marist barely fell to Bucknell last week in a 19-17 thriller.
Yale (0-0, 0-0) at Georgetown (2-0, 0-0), 1:00 ET
The two familiar foes meet up at Georgetown for what looks like a pretty solid matchup. Yale starts off its season with its feature back Mordecai Cargill taking the bulk of the carries, while Georgetown hopes to build on its early season victories.
Cornell (0-0, 0-0) at Fordham (1-1, 0-0), 1:00 ET
Jeff Matthews and Cornell begin what looks like a promising season in New York City against Fordham to start off the year. The Big Red’s performance in this game will give a good indicator of the type of season the squad will have and if they have a shot at the championship.
Brown (0-0, 0-0) at Holy Cross (0-1, 0-0), 1:00 ET
A lot of questions still circulate around this Brown team that fell apart in the last two games of the season last year. The Crusaders enter this game as the only team to beat Harvard, the undefeated champions last season.
Penn (0-0, 0-0) at Lafayette (1-0, 0-0), 6:00 ET
Penn enters their season kickoff with a lot to prove. With no key Ivy League competitors on the schedule until the end of the season, the Quakers must perform well in these opening games. Lafayette comes into this game against a three-point win over William & Mary.
Butler (1-1, 0-0) at Dartmouth (0-0, 0-0), 7:00 ET
A relatively new Big Green squad will kickoff its season in a home opener against Butler this weekend. Butler hopes to continue its nice start to the season after last week’s 42-13 win over Franklin College.
