BMW Championship 2012: Day 1 Leaderboard Updates, Highlights and More

A pair of this year’s major champions top the leaderboard, among others, following the first round of the 2012 BMW Championship.

PGA Championship winner Rory McIlroy shares the lead with reigning U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, Bo Van Pelt and Canadian Graham DeLaet.

Tiger Woods went toe-to-toe with McIlroy in his group and lurks one stroke behind after shooting a 65.

McIlroy’s first round continues his blistering play of late, which includes the PGA Championship and a win at the Deutsche Bank Championship last weekend. The Northern Irishman seems back in form from a slow start to 2012.

Simpson fell off the map following his U.S. Open win in June, but he looks on point in the early stages. He finished the round with four straight birdies on the last four holes to tie for the lead.

While McIlroy and Simpson have continued their successes early on at Crooked Stick in Carmel, Ind., the rest of the leaders have not been intimidated. Half of the field shot 69 or better, with many threatening to hit double digits under par by Friday’s end.

Here’s how the leaderboard shakes out following Thursday’s action:
