Weekend Bubble Watch: Winners and Losers

T.R. PetersonCorrespondent IMarch 1, 2009

Let the madness begin!

Several mid-major conference tournaments begin this week. That means many of the bubble teams from the power conferences will be holding their breath.

Siena, Butler, and most notably, Creighton, will have many of the bubble teams rooting for them not to get upset. These teams would strongly be considered for at-large spots if they don’t win their respective conference tournaments and receive the automatic bid.

UAB, USC, Nebraska, Baylor, and Temple have played themselves off the bubble radar and are no longer under consideration. After losing three straight games, Arizona has played themselves back onto the bubble.

Here are the weekend's winner and losers. As always, comments are welcome.

Note: Next edition will be published on Friday morning. All RPI and SOS numbers are taken from realtimerpi.com.

The Badgers beat bubble-mate Michigan on Sunday and improved to 17-10 overall and 9-7 in the Big Ten. They have a crucial game at Minnesota on Tuesday and will finish with Indiana. A split should be enough to get the Badgers in as an at-large team.

The Cougars probably ensured themselves a bid with a huge win over MWC leader Utah on Saturday. They have won eight of ten and will finish the regular season at Wyoming before hosting doormat Air Force in their finale.

Oklahoma St.

OSU got a signature win on Saturday by beating Texas 68-59 to improve to 8-6 in the Big 12. A win over Kansas St. on Tuesday is a must before traveling to Oklahoma to finish the season.

Other winners

Tennessee, Texas A&M, Kansas St., St. Mary’s, Maryland, Providence, Penn St., Rhode Island, San Diego St., Creighton, Davidson.

The Wildcats have put themselves in a precarious situation after losing to LSU on Saturday. The are 4-6 in their last ten and have dropped to 8-6 in the SEC. They host Georgia before finishing the regular season at Florida.

Notre Dame

The Irish lost a golden opportunity to get the attention of the selection committee by losing to UConn over the weekend. They must win out against Villanova and St. John’s to get to .500 in the Big East.

The Wolverines continue their roller-coaster ride towards an at-large bid after losing to Wisconsin on Sunday. The Wolverines have a must-win game against Minnesota on Saturday and then probably need a win or two in the Big Ten tourney.

Other Losers

Cincinnati, Virginia Tech, Arizona, Siena, Utah St.
