Chris Canty Signs Six-Year, $42 Million Deal with Defense-Bolstering Giants

Matt MayerContributor IMarch 1, 2009

It has been reported that the Giants signed free agent Chris Canty to a six-year deal worth about $42 million, with $17.25 million guaranteed.

I think this is another strong move by GM Jerry Reese. The Giants were not thought of as big free agent spenders, but they have added three solid pieces to the defense this weekend.

The latest moves by Reese add depth to the defensive line, which is something that many of us believe was an essential part of the 2007 Super Bowl run. The D-line is looking pretty scary with a rotation of Osi, Tuck, Kiwi, Canty, Robbins, Cofield, and Bernard.

The signing has me a little concerned, however, about Kiwi's future. I hope this move isn't an indication that Kiwi is going to be traded for a WR.

I don't think bringing Braylan Edwards to NY is a good idea. I like the thought of bringing in Boldin, but I think trading Kiwi and first round picks is too expensive for him.
