Haskell Invitational Stakes (G1) winner Paynter experienced several significant setbacks on Monday in his battle against colitis, prompting owner Ahmed Zayat to declare the next 24 hours critical to his recovery.

Paynter is being treated at Upstate Equine Medical Center in Schuylerville, New York, where he has been since August 26 after developing a 103 degree fever. It was the second time in less than a month the colt had to be taken to a veterinary clinic after becoming ill. He was diagnosed with colitis last week.
