Manchester United barely defeated Southampton in their English Premier League (EPL) match. Robin van Persie's penalty miss is one of the reasons.

Who cannot forget when Van Persie missed the penalty and tried to cover his mistake? The attempt to cover the mistake was passing the ball to Kelvin Davis.

The result was an equalizer followed by another goal by Van Persie. If Manchester United won the match, why did the penalty miss by Van Persie let the club down?

1. Southampton might have won the match

The match against Southampton was not an easy one for Manchester United. Rickie Lambert and Morgan Schneiderlin each scored a goal for Southampton.

Southampton was playing with a winning attitude and not conceding anything. Manchester United was doing the opposite in this match

Manchester United appeared to be headed for a second defeat in the current EPL season. When Van Persie missed the penalty, Manchester United was behind Southampton by one point.

Imagine the reaction towards Van Persie if Southampton won?

2. Careless attitude?

Van Persie told Sky Sports that he did not know what he was thinking. He said that in reference to the missed penalty.

While Van Persie admitted his mistake, it appears that he was not paying attention to the match. When a player is participating in a match, his mind (as well as heart and soul) must be in the match.

A careless player during the match will make mistakes that help the opponent. In the case of Van Persie, it will not help him at Old Trafford.

At one point during the match against Southampton, Sir Alex Ferguson was not pleased. Van Persie was already generating doubts after United's defeat to Everton.

Lessons to be learned

Manchester United may have defeated Southampton, but it must play with cohesion. The players including Van Persie should not concede anything during a match.

Van Persie should concentrate more on the matches when he is on the field. He should avoid any errors such as penalty misses.

No club, regardless of its position in the EPL table, should be taken for granted. The result could be a disaster for teams that are on the top or bottom of the EPL table.

It is hoped that Manchester United and Robin van Persie learn this important lesson.
