Jets Making a Big Splash Early in the Free Agent Period

Tony ArnoldineCorrespondent IFebruary 28, 2009

First the New York Jets snagged Bart Scott after a little back-and-forth with the Ravens.

Then former Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan scheduled former Ravens safety Jim Leonhard for a Saturday visit with his new team. Everyone seems to think that's where Leonhard will eventually sign. I don't know if he's a guy to write home about, but he is a rising defensive back in the NFL.

And finally, "Gang Green" has completed a deal that will send two draft picks to Philadelphia for cornerback Lito Sheppard.

It shouldn't be a shock that Ryan's philosophy is to win with defense, because that's what the Ravens have done since their inception into the NFL. Maybe this team can win with someone like Kellen Clemens or Brett Ratliff at quarterback, but I still think they would be wise to get someone who can better manage the game, like Jeff Garcia.

Hell, even Rex Grossman got a team with a strong defense to the Super Bowl, and he's available.
