How Turfway Purses Stack Up with Kentucky Downs, Hoosier Park

I know it sounds like a broken record. But like a scab you can’t help but pick at, this time of the year I have to look at how individual race purses compare in Kentucky versus Indiana’s slots-enhanced Hoosier Park. The happy news this year is that Kentucky Downs is offering lucrative purses at its six-day meet next month, thanks to more than a year of having the Instant Racing parimutuel machines that mimic slots machines. Because Instant Racing is parimutuel, it accrues money toward Kentucky Thoroughbred Development Fund purses — something the track had only minimally before because Turfway Park is considered the host track for live racing in the state in September. Now, half of Kentucky Downs’ straight maiden and allowance races come from KTDF, allowing the track to offer $60,000 purses for non-claiming maiden races, for instance...
