The La Liga BBVA Team of the Week continues with the selection of another club. The process of selecting teams that have not received publicity continues.

The week that begins will feature another team from Madrid which receives scant attention. The team is Atletico Madrid and it is the second recipient of the La Liga BBVA Team of the Week.


Current Outline

Atletico Madrid is known to its supporters (as well as those familiar with La Liga) as Los Rojiblancos (The Red and White) and Los Colchoneros (Mattress Manufacturers). One of the principal players are Radamel Falcao (Striker). Diego Forlan (Forward) once played for the team.

Atletico Madrid received publicity the previous week when Falcao scored three goals. Tiago (midfield) scored the fourth for the team against Athletic Club Bilbao. The result was that Club Atletico Madrid left Athletic Club Bilbao scoreless.

Los Colchoneros played against Chelsea FC in the UEFA Super Cup held in Monaco on August 31. The result was a historic win for Atletico Madrid over Chelsea, secondary to a hat trick by Falcao.


History and Data

Club Atletico Madrid has a rich history dating to its founding in the year 1903. The club was founded by students from the Basque country of Spain in Madrid according to the UEFA webpage.

In order to avoid confusion with Athletic Club Bilbao, Atletico Madrid remained with the red and white stripes on their uniforms. Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid has been home to the club since 1923.

Club Atletico Madrid has made eight appearances in the UEFA Champions League and 18 in the UEFA Europa League. The club has appeared in other events such as the UEFA Super Cup and EUSA Cup.

Atletico Madrid won the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 UEFA Europa Cup. It won the 1975 EUSA Cup and the 2010 UEFA Super Cup.

The club is the winner of the 1961-1962 UEFA Cup Winners Cup. Atletico Madrid is the recipient of the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Atletico Madrid's biggest victory was leaving Dublin City scoreless at its home base in the year 1958.

Atletico Madrid experienced the worst defeat when Rotterdam defeated Los Colchoneros in 1963.  Los Rojiblancos are currently ranked number eight in the UEFA Ranking.
