Boston Celtics: Why the Celtics Won't Contend for 2012-13 NBA Title

Ethan Sherwood StraussNBA Lead WriterAugust 31, 2012

The Celtics keep showing up at their own funeral. They were uninspiring in the second half of the 2009-2010 season, only to make a surprise run that ended in a finals Game 7. The Heat bounced them in five back in 2011, but they returned with some vigor in 2012.

The Derrick Rose injury opened up a relatively easy path. A Chris Bosh injury made Miami vulnerable. Suddenly, Boston was within a game of the finals, despite carrying a roster of guys who remember playing against Michael Jordan.

Can they remain competitive, even at this old, collective age? Kevin Garnett would turn 37 before a theoretical finals. Paul Pierce and Jason Terry would be 35. It's a tough road for the Celtics, even if they're used to surprising us in their dotage.
