Football has its fair share of serious characters, but there are some humorous men running around on the pitch every week.
In this day and age we have easy access to the players and can tell who is funny or not. They aren't the only funny ones though, as are players in the past.
These players have some pretty funny quotes but can also make us laugh in other ways. Sometimes we laugh at them and sometimes with them.
Here are the 10 of the funniest footballers of all time.
It only took one line for Peter Crouch to be considered one of the funniest men in sport.
According to the Daily Mirror, Crouch's response when asked a question saw him top a poll for funny moments in sports.
Here is what Crouch was asked and his response.
"When asked: 'What would you be if you weren't a footballer?' the Spurs star answered: 'A virgin!' His position as the wittiest man in sport is backed up his famous 'robot dance' to celebrate his goal for England against Hungary."
George Best was a witty character and gave football some pretty funny quotes during his career. FIFA.com provides us with some of the best quotes here. Below are a few examples.
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered."
"I used to go missing a lot: Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World."
"If I'd been born ugly, you'd never have heard of Pele."
Jose Luis Chilavert was never afraid to speak his mind and that allowed for some pretty funny quotes during his career. FIFA.com presented some of these quotes where Chilavert had much to say about his opponents or himself.
Here are some examples.
“So Navarro Montoya has compared me to a Fiat 600? Well, I might be a 'Fitito' but I’ve got the engine of a Formula 1 car. As for his engine, it’s losing oil. He’s no match for me. We’re not at the same level.”
“Right now good goalkeepers are going the same way as the dinosaurs. They’re an endangered species.”
“I’ve had a lot of fights on the pitch, but what did people expect? With the face I’ve got I have to play the bad guy. It’s a lot easier that way. Being the good guy just isn’t me.”
Romario is another player who has had some amusing things to say during his career. Here are some quotes from the Brazilian forward as presented by FIFA.com.
"There's nothing I like more than football ...except for sex."
"The goalscorer always deserves some credit but not this time. The way I hit that, even my mother would have saved it."
The former player's comment that he was better than Diego Maradona (h/t Goal.com) also put a smile on the face, although he was certainly being serious about that statement.
Unlike some of the other players on this list, Eric Cantona's quotes are along the more philosophical route, but they were still interesting and amusing. Goal.com presents some of his quotes here.
Add that to his swagger on the pitch and his overall unique character and you've got a funny player in Eric Cantona.
Diego Maradona was funnier when he stopped playing the game, but he's still a good fit for this list.
The Telegraph provides us with some of his funnier quotes in this article. Maradona's feud with Pele has produced some pretty interesting moments on its own, but his antics in the media have added even more humour.
David Luiz seems like a weird choice for this list, but there's a good amount of evidence on the web that he's a pretty funny guy.
Courtesy of YouTube, here are incidents one, two and three for your viewing pleasure. The third example, where Luiz is creating a sufficiently awkward situation for Fernando Torres and Frank Lampard during an interview, is particularly funny.
Luiz looks like a bit of a prankster from these videos and is probably a pretty funny guy in the dressing room. Here is another YouTube video where Luiz plays a big prank on his former Benfica teammate Angel Di Maria.
Ryan Babel's twitter account provides us with a little insight on the Dutch winger's humour. His tweets over the last few days concern the use of the "BabelCopter."
This "Copter" seems to be available for use during transfer dealings and players such as Moussa Dembele, Dimitar Berbatov and Nicklas Bendtner have all been mentioned in relation to the infamous mode of transportation.
