Some teams will be playing for titles in 2012—conference and a national title that is. Others will be looking to get to a BCS bowl game. Other teams have “go to a bowl” as their symbol of success for 2012.
However, there are a couple schools out there that literally, or figuratively, have nothing to lose in the 2012 season. Penn State, Ohio State, North Carolina and UCF will all be spending the holiday season at home due to bowl bans. That ban is a very literal “nothing to play for” when compared to teams with bowl eligibility.
However, there are other teams out there who are in a similar boat, just not by definition. Arkansas with a lame duck coach and a host of seniors ready to get to the NFL will be interesting to watch. Boston College and Maryland, two teams with coaches under fire and coming off bad 2011 seasons, will be experiments in a coach keeping his team focused. So, which team really has nothing to lose in 2012?
