Few teams made more sweeping offseason changes than the Dallas Mavericks. Will their place-holding, new-look roster be the next step? Can it stop their Western Conference slide?

In this episode of Basketball by Association, NBA Lead Writer Josh Martin joins assistant editors Ethan Norof and Joel C. Cordes as they break down all the key roster losses and additions, discuss the biggest storylines to watch and set realistic expectations for the Mavs.

There's no denying that the additions of Chris Kaman, O.J. Mayo, Darren Collison, Elton Brand and Dahntay Jones make the Mavericks better than last year's lackluster outfit. Yet, how do these new pieces all fit, and are they enough to keep pace with a vastly improved playoff field?

Their paltry title defense was largely useless after striking out on Deron Williams and Dwight Howard this offseason. What if this is all for naught and the Mavericks still can't land another mega-star to pair with Nowitzki?

The Mavs have been trying to maintain financial flexibility, build for the future AND continue to contend with Dirk Nowitzki. How much longer can Dallas owner Mark Cuban continue to play it "both ways"?

This year's team will be fun to watch and competitive in the regular season, but how are they any different than the Don Nelson-era squads that racked up everything but playoff wins?
