Carolina Panthers vs. New York Jets: Preseason Week 3 Live Score, Analysis
Three of the most high-profile quarterbacks in the NFL take center stage tonight as the New York Jets play host to the Carolina Panthers at MetLife Stadium.
The dual-headed quarterback threat of Tim Tebow and Mark Sanchez has yet to yield positive results for the New York Jets, who have yet to score a touchdown in their two preseason matchups.
In contrast, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has picked up right where he left off last season and had a dynamic performance last week against the Miami Dolphins, completing 8-of-11 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown.
The Carolina Panthers have not won a preseason game on the road since 2007.
Tonight’s showdown will air nationally on NBC, with kickoff scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. ET.
This will be the third game of the preseason for both teams. The third preseason game is commonly the most important, as it is the game that starters play the longest and it is the week before rosters are cut to 53 players.
A Couple Storylines to Follow Tonight
- How will the Jets handle their rotation at right tackle?
- Can the Jets finally put a touchdown on the board?
- How does Thomas Davis look coming off injury?
- Can Cam Newton remain dominant without Steve Smith?

And that's all she wrote. Incomplete pass to the end zone.
FINAL SCORE
Carolina Panthers - 17
New York Jets - 12
New York Jets preseason summary: 37 drives, 0 touchdowns.
Tebow has the Jets in scoring territory, at the 29 yard line. Two seconds left in the game. Time for one last heave.
Tebow completes back-to-back passes. The second a pass in the middle of the field to Dedrick Epps for 22 yards to the 49 yard line. Good ball placement on a seam route, led Epps properly.
Jets offense takes over at their own 15 yard line with 1:53 left to play in the game.
Panthers - 17
Jets - 12
3rd-and-15 and the Panthers run the ball, appear willing to run the clock out. Jets out of time outs so the clock winds down to the two minute warning.
Panthers punt coming up next. Followed by Tebow Time. Two minutes to play, down five points with no time outs. What will he do?
Panthers running back Armond Smith is a player. Doubt he makes the team, but he's making a good argument for it tonight. Smaller back at 5'9, 190 but runs hard and has been finding the running lanes all night.
Luke Kuechly interviewed by NBC and put an image up of his college statistics, but the graphic does not include tackles?
Panthers have the ball back. Clausen takes a delay-of-game penalty on the second play of the drive. Need to have that offense organized quicker. No reason not to be prepared.
Tim Tebow and the Jets go three and out after Tebow misses on two throws then takes a sack where he had 10 seconds to throw.
His current passing numbers: 2-for-7, 21 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT
Panthers go three and out under Jimmy Clausen. Clausen missed a throw on 3rd-and-5 that he should have hit. Overthrew the receiver on the sidelines.
Jets taking over at their own 19. Tebow coming back out.
Jimmy Clausen in the game for the Panthers. Amazing how far his career has fallen. From being on of the most highly touted high school recruits ever, to playing at Notre Dame and having future number one overall pick expectations, to being drafted in the second round.
Now... He's backing up Derek Anderson.
Had visions of "Tebow Time" on 3rd-and-17 down 17-12 in the fourth quarter but alas, Tebow throws an interception to Reggie Smith who returned it to the Carolina 39 yard line.
Bad decision by Tebow, the throw was right to Smith.
Tebow running around in the backfield like he's an 11-year old playing Madden. Somehow scrambles through traffic for the first down.
Tebow chants coming out in Metlife.
Cool release time graphic by NBC.
Mark Sanchez = 0.37 seconds
Tim Tebow = 0.47 seconds
I believe Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady are both in the 0.30-0.33 range to give a reference as to why Tebow's throwing motion is a problem.
Tim Tebow's throwing motion still needs to be adjusted. I've read that he's worked on it every offseason, but he always reverts back to dipping the ball back which tips off defenders.
At the one yard line, Anderson play-fakes to Smith and hits Barnidge on the left side for the touchdown.
Panthers lead 17-12 with 11:31 left in the fourth quarter.
Panthers with 2nd-and-goal at the one yard line following a nice run by Armond Smith who hit the cutback lane for a six yard gain.
Smith has been very impressive. Great vision.
Derek Anderson with a nice completion on the right side of the field to TE Gary Barnidge. Barnidge was lined up on the safety and just got position to make the catch. Anderson with a nicely placed ball.
Panthers already in Jets red zone early in the fourth.
END OF THIRD QUARTER
Carolina Panthers: 10
New York Jets: 12
Panthers have the ball at their own 37 heading into the fourth.
This pretty much explains what we're seeing out of Tebow tonight:
Tebow plays like his head is in a brace: Never moves.
— Pete Prisco (@PriscoCBS) August 27, 2012
Tebow incomplete pass out-of-bounds on 3rd-and-goal. Nick Folk comes in and kicks a 30-yard field goal to give the Jets a 12-10 lead.
Jets fans boo the offense off the field after the third down incompletion. Still zero preseason touchdowns for the Jets offense.
Tebow now with a really bad decision on 2nd-and-goal. Stared down his number one option on a slant and the linebacker playing zone stepped up and almost intercepted it. Tebow never saw him.
Tebow with a nice play on 3rd-and-8 in the red zone. Spun away from a tackler from the blind side. Then hit Stephen Hill in the middle of the field for 10 yards for the first down.
As soon as Tebow comes in, the play calling becomes ultra-conservative, three consecutive rushing plays to start the drive.
It's Tebow Time in New York as Tebow enters the game with approximately five minutes left in the third quarter. Tebow enterted to a rain of cheers by the home fans.
