New York Yankees Spring Training: Grades for Second Game

Sean SerritellaCorrespondent IFebruary 26, 2009

This was the first New York Yankees game of the year that I watched on TV. The Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays by a score of 5-1. The Yankees got a great pitching performance from some of their young hurlers.

A+ Jorge Posada

He went 2 for 2 with one run scored and two RBI along with a home run. He also had a RBI double. That’s an A+ performance.

A+ Phil Coke

Coke pitched two scoreless innings, giving up only one hit. He had a strikeout and walked none.

A- Shelley Duncan

Duncan had one at-bat and made the most of it, belting a three-run home run.

B+ Phil Hughes

He hit two batters, but pitched two scoreless innings while striking out two.

C+ Brett Gardner

Gardner went 0 for 2 while throwing out a runner at second base.

D Derek Jeter

Jeter went 0 for 3, and his average after two spring training games is .167.

F  J.B. Cox

Cox pitched one inning and gave up one earned run on three hits.

End thoughts: The Yankees have a great young bullpen that they will need to count on this year.
