The Minnesota Vikings are coming off of the 34-16 stomping of the Buffalo Bills this past Friday night in their second preseason game.  While final scores and win/loss records mean very little in the preseason, certain results can change the course of an entire season.

While all NFL coaches wants to see their starters progress during the course of the preseason, they all keep their collective fingers crossed in hopes that key players do not suffer any major injuries.

As the Vikings prepare to face the San Diego Chargers on Friday, I look at some players that have been injured and provide an updated status report.

Adrian Peterson, Starting Running Back

After two weeks of speculation that Peterson (knee) would return for even a brief appearance in the third preseason game, coach Leslie Frazier confirmed that Peterson is sitting out the entire preseason.

Frazier reiterated that the move was not a setback, and is purely the team being cautious with the All-Pro.  Peterson, at least publicly, seems on board with the decision.  “We’re on the same page, we discussed it for a little bit and we were in agreement. It is what it is." Peterson said.

Game status versus Chargers: OUT

Chris Cook, Starting Cornerback

The Vikings starting cornerback Chris Cook suffered a concussion in last Friday's win over the Bills.

He has already been ruled out of this Friday's matchup against the Chargers after not passing post concussion tests.  He is expected to pass his last post concussion test on Wednesday.

"I don't think we'll try to put (Cook) out there (on Friday) with this short amount of time," Frazier said. "I'm hoping that we can get at least a day of practice with him (Wednesday)."

Cook does not have a history of concussions so he is expected to return in time for the start of the regular season.  It is also a positive to hear that he could resume practicing as soon as Wednesday.

Veteran Chris Carr or rookie Josh Robinson will start opposite Antoine Winfield with Robinson expected to see an increase in his reps.  Robinson missed the first preseason game with a hamstring injury and the extra snaps will help the coaches gauge the third-round pick's progress to date.

Game status versus Chargers: OUT

Kyle Rudolph, Starting Tight End

In addition to CB Chris Cook, Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph also suffered a concussion in Friday's game. Though unlike Cook, Rudloph did pass his concussion tests. He returned to practice on Monday night.

ESPN 1500 Twin Cities asked if that means Rudolph didn't actually have a concussion. Frazier said, "His was a little bit different. In just talking with our medical staff and even talking with him, he doesn't think he has a concussion. He thinks it was more something with his eardrum. But we still had to go through concussion protocol and that's what they took him through."

The Viking starters are expected to play the entire first half on Friday and possibly another series in the third quarter.  If Rudolph has a solid week of practice he should get the start.

Game status versus Chargers: Probable

Letroy Guion, Battling for Starting Nose Tackle

Minnesota Vikings NT Letroy Guion suffered a sprained right PCL in the preseason opener and was originally expected to miss only one to two weeks.

Unfortunately, he suffered a setback in his recovery on Tuesday and will miss Friday's game against the Chargers.

Guion was expected to be the starting nose tackle with veteran Fred Evans backing him up.

His availability for the regular season opener may be in jeopardy.

Game status versus Chargers: OUT

Geoff Schwartz, Backup Offensive Guard/Tackle

Vikings OG Geoff Schwartz was signed as a free agent to compete for the starting job at right guard.

Early in training camp he had to have surgery to remove a sports hernia putting a four to six week timetable on his return.

Schwartz will end up missing all of training camp and possibly some some regular season action.

The injury means that Brandon Fusco will start at right guard, while Schwartz could have a hard time finding snaps early in the season.

Game status versus Chargers: OUT

Robert Blanton, Backup Safety

Safety Robert Blanton (hamstring) was drafted in the fifth round to compete for a safety job but has missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury.

He did return to practice this past week, but the Vikings apparently want to be extra cautious with him.

"We are trying to determine that," Frazier said. "We are hoping that he can play in this ballgame on Friday night so we can get some tape on him and evaluate him in game situations. When he was out there he did a good job in the offseason program that we had, then the short time that he was in camp.

"But we want to get some game tape just to be able to evaluate him a little better. Hopefully, he will be able to play this Friday night, if not, for sure the Houston game, so we will see. Yesterday, he finished practice and he did well. So we have our fingers crossed hoping that he will play Friday night."

Game status versus Chargers: Doubtful

John Carlson, Backup Tight End

Vikings tight end John Carlson (knee) hasn't practiced since he suffered a Grade 2 MCL strain on July 31.

Coach Leslie Frazier hasn't ruled out the possibility of Carlson returning to practice this week but he hadn't as of Tuesday.  Frazier did say that he "is still making progress" and didn't rule out the possibility of Carlson making his preseason Vikings debut on Friday against the Chargers.

With Carlson not getting snaps on Monday and Tuesday the possibilities would seem to be bleak for him to play this Friday.

Game status versus Chargers: Doubtful

DeMarcus Love, Backup Offensive Tackle

Vikings T DeMarcus Love has progressed from his pectoral injury and could make his preseason debut against the Chargers on Friday.

"DeMarcus Love looked pretty good (Monday) when we watched him on tape and talked with him after practice as well," Frazier said. "He feels pretty good. So, it looks like he's going to have a chance of maybe playing in this ballgame, which would be good for him and for our team just to be able to get some work from him on tape in the preseason."

Love is likely the top backup to Matt Kalil and Phil Loadholt with Geoff Schwartz injured.

Game status versus Chargers: Probable

Solomon Elimimian, Backup Outside Linebacker

Backup linebacker Solomon Elimimian has been sidelined since last Friday after suffering a hamstring injury.

He did return to practice this week and seems to be on track to play on Friday against the Chargers.

Game status versus Chargers: Probable

Jordan Todman, Backup Running Back

Vikings running back Jordan Todman has been dealing with a sprained ankle.

He has yet to participate in a preseason game but seems to be on track to return this Friday against the Chargers.

Vikings running back Lex Hilliard has done little to run away with the third-string spot.  Todman still may have an outside chance to impress if he can make the most of the last two preseason games.

Game status versus Chargers: Probable

Larry Dean, Backup Outside Linebacker

Vikings linebacker and special teams standout Larry Dean missed practice on Wednesday with a shoulder sprain.

His status for Friday's matchup is "up in the air" according to Frazier.

Game status versus Chargers: Questionable
