EPL Winners and Losers After Week 1 of Action

0 of 10

At last, the Premier League is back. After the usual compulsory spell of preseason activities, all the action from the Premiership is underway.

We have seen some shockers, blowouts and matches that couldn't see the two opponents separated. Along with these matches, each team has seen their new signings in action, as they received their first taste of the fast-paced, physical Premier League.

For some teams, their signings had their dream debuts, while others could have just done better. Now, each team knows what task lies ahead for their second match of the EPL season.

But, before we look at that, let us analyze the winners and losers from Week 1 of league action.

    Status after first match: Losers

Not the ideal way Brendan Rodgers would have liked to start the new season.

The first Premier League match for Rodgers at Liverpool was pretty much a nightmare start to his campaign, losing 3-0 to West Brom.

The first goal came from Zoltan Gera, and it was an absolute wonder goal. It came from outside the box and there was just nothing that Pepe Reina could do about the strike.

A bit later on, the Reds conceded a penalty and Daniel Agger ended up getting sent off. Shane Long took the penalty and made an absolute disaster out of it.

Liverpool, however, ended up conceding another penalty soon after, and Peter Odemwingie put it away without much difficulty.

Then to top off the victory for West Brom, Romelu Lukaku scored off a header in his debut with the club.

In this match, Liverpool had numerous chances, but they just couldn't capitalize with any of the opportunities that came their way.

Right now, Liverpool are in a bad situation and must quickly rebound.

Swansea had the complete opposite start to that of Liverpool's: a 5-0 victory over QPR at Loftus Road.

Their new signing, Michu, starred and scored two of the five goals in the match. His first goal was a great one as he retrieved the ball outside the box and fired it in past the goalkeeper. His second goal was just as nice, hitting a left-footed curler that the keeper couldn't stop.

Nathan Dyer had the spotlight for the next period of time, as he scored two goals as well. He found the ball in space and put it into net for his first, and his second goal came from a nice ball from Kemy Agustien. Dyer then showed great control and scored the goal.

The final blow came from Scott Sinclair as he fired a shot into the goal.

This puts the Swans at the top of the table along with Fulham. If they can put in another good performance in their next match, they would find themselves in a great position.

Arsenal did not have a great start to the season, but it wasn't too bad either.

The Gunners were held to a steady draw despite having some good chances to score.

The team also got to see their three new signings—Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla—join the action of the Premier League. In the first half, Podolski and Cazorla were the two additions to start, while Giroud was on the bench.

Podolski had a more-or-less quiet half in which he had a couple of good chances. Santi Cazorla on the other hand was Arsenal's best player not only in the first half, but throughout the match. He was setting up all the good chances and was the engine of the team.

Olivier Giroud came in the second half to add some offensive firepower to the squad. He managed to earn what was arguably the best chance of the match when Cazorla put him through on his right foot. Giroud however couldn't finish the chance.

Despite a draw, Arsenal managed to see their signings make an impact and the Gunners should feel confident ahead of their upcoming Premier League match.

    Status after first match: Losers

After a decent season following their promotion to the Premier League, Norwich will be looking to have an even better season in the 2012-13 campaign.

However, they just weren't able to get their season started on a good note, enduring a 5-0 loss to Fulham.

Without Clint Dempsey, Fulham managed to earn a great start to the season. With one goal from Duff, two goals from Petric, one goal from Kacaniklic and a final goal from Sidwell, Norwich now find themselves at the bottom of the table along with QPR.

It was just the first match, but Norwich will need to recover strongly from their loss.

    Status after first match: Winners

Despite beginning their season with a loss, Southampton still played a great match against reigning Premier League champions, Manchester City.

The first goal of the match came from Carlos Tevez as he hit a nice low shot that went past the keeper.

Then, the Saints managed to score two consecutive goals coming from Rickie Lambert and Steve Davis. This kind of run was extremely boosting for Southampton.

However, a late winner from Samir Nasri saw the Blues win the match.

This match might have been a loss, but it was certainly an encouraging performance from Southampton to prove that they are prepared to be back in the Premier League.

    Status after first match: Losers

Tottenham was looking to a positive opening of their season with new signings Gylfi Sigurdsson and Jan Vertonghen. However, a first match loss to Newcastle is less than encouraging for the Spurs.

Demba Ba was the first to score in the match as he put a nice curled effort pass the goalkeeper. However, Jermaine Defoe managed to equalize when he scored off a Krul save.

But then, Hatem Ben Arfa did his dribbling work and managed to earn a penalty, which he put away with ease.

This was just the first match for Tottenham and they will be looking to rebound off this loss by winning their next match.

Chelsea managed to earn a solid start to the season with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic. The Blues also saw Eden Hazard and Oscar in action in their first Premier League match.

Eden Hazard had a great debut to his 2012-13 campaign as he played a part in the production of both the goals.

The first goal came from a good, incisive pass by Eden Hazard that put Branislav Ivanovic through on goal and he then slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.

Then, the second goal game shortly after as Hazard earned Chelsea a penalty with his great dribbling skills. Frank Lampard put the penalty away without difficulty.

This productive kind of performance is what Chelsea will need to succeed, and so far, things look good for the Blues.

Manchester City

    Status after first match: Losers

Despite beginning their new campaign with a victory over Southampton, Manchester City find themselves in a less than promising position as they lost one of their offensive forces, Sergio Aguero.

Even though the noisy neighbors have Carlos Tevez to rely on for goals, Aguero's loss will be felt in the team.

They just managed to earn themselves a narrow victory over Southampton but will need to be playing their best to win key matches against the bigger teams.

The Citizens will be missing Aguero but they will need to live without him for a bit.

Manchester United

    Status after first match: Losers

Even though new signings Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie played a part in Manchester United's season opener, the Red Devils just couldn't find a way to score against Everton.

The first half opened with adrenaline fueling both teams. Play was physical and both teams were producing some good chances.

However, in the second half, Everton was the team to break the deadlock as Marouane Fellaini sent a header past De Gea. Michael Carrick wasn't strong enough to stop Fellaini from scoring.

This match is one that Manchester United will want to forget and they will be looking to do much better in their next match.

After having signed players such as Park Ji-Sung and Junior Hoilett, QPR was looking to open their season well, however, they could not push off the way they wished, as they went through a 5-0 loss to Swansea.

Swansea's new signing Michu did deal some serious damage along with Nathan Dyer and Scott Sinclair.

QPR will need to improve their overall performances if they are to do well along with their new signings.
