Tonight at SummerSlam, one of the most anticipated WWE events of year, we will watch matches between the biggest names in the company such as Brock Lesnar, Triple H, CM Punk, John Cena, etc.
However, there are some very important superstars left off of this card, like Randy Orton. Another one of these glaring omissions is Cody Rhodes.
Although Rhodes is young and most say he has his whole career ahead of him, I fail to see where he lost his way in achieving main event status. A few months ago, it would have appeared that Rhodes was headed to challenge the World Heavyweight champion after he lost his Intercontinental belt.
It was assumed that he dropped it so that he could move on to bigger and better things. However, as we have seen with Dolph Ziggler losing the U.S. title in December and winning Money in the Bank in July, this process could be longer than expected.
So what caused Cody Rhodes to be lost in the shuffle?
For storyline purposes, it could be observed as the doing of Booker T, the new SmackDown general manager, who has feuded with Rhodes in recent history, but there has to be an internal explanation as to why his push is being neglected.
According to Richard Gray from WrestlingNewsWorld.com, Rhodes is being buried because of a positive Wellness test for a weight loss drug, which he has since adamantly denied on Twitter. This would explain why he is currently feuding with Sin Cara and not in the running for any sort of belt. This may result in a filler match during tonight’s pay per view, but nothing more than that.
Could the firing of his brother, Goldust, have anything to do with this current burial?
As it was reported by Dave Scherer from PWInsider.com, Goldust was released in May for undisclosed reasons at a SmackDown taping. Although it is not likely that Rhodes would be extremely affected long term by this familial dispute with the company, I could imagine that this would somewhat affect his push temporarily.
Now that we may have some idea as to why his push has been postponed, the real question is, should Rhodes have been left off the card for SummerSlam tonight? I believe the answer is no.
If his positive Wellness test was enough reason to punish him, then the WWE should have suspended him rather than wasting him in the program with Sin Cara that he is currently working with.
If his offense was not enough to suspend him, then why not let him continue on his way to main event glory? The firing of his brother should not affect his career since he is his own superstar and was not involved in the acts that got Goldust fired.
What do you think? Should Cody Rhodes be left off the SummerSlam card?
