Barcelona Transfer News: Alex Song to Barca Puts La Liga Title in Reach
Barcelona’s impending acquisition of Alex Song is a move that will help them overtake Real Madrid to win this season’s La Liga title.
Song's sitting during Arsenal’s opening match against Sunderland affirmed earlier suspicions that he was on the move to Barca. He’ll reportedly be heading to Barcelona on Sunday to undergo a medical physical prior to the move, according to TalkSPORT.
Barca will be shelling out £17 million for the 24-year-old Cameroon midfielder.
The price may be high, but the footballer in question is worth the price of admission for a Barcelona team with the La Liga title on their mind.
He was brought in to be the replacement for Seydou Keita, the recently departed versatile midfielder who is now playing in China.
So what exactly does the newest Barca player bring to the table?
Song has been the staple of the Arsenal midfield for the past four seasons and was regarded as one of the most improved players over the last two years for the Gunners. His experience facilitating the charge in the middle of the Arsenal attack will greatly help him on the pitch with his new teammates in Barcelona.
While he’s not known for his scoring prowess, he won’t be asked to do much of that, as Lionel Messi, David Villa and friends have the attack locked down.
The midfielder doesn’t seem to mind not being involved in the attack; he brings other desirable attributes to Barca. He’s recorded 11 assists and one goal and has an 84.3 pass-success rate in 34 Premier League matches. In addition to that, he’s also a very willing and capable back-end defender.
He may not start right away and may need time to see significant action, but injuries and inconsistencies do happen.
Francesc Vilanova will be able to have greater flexibility and peace of mind knowing he has a midfielder like Song in his back pocket if needed.
